From Zero to SHABANG!

Keynote Presentation

Every portrait photographer knows the feeling – the scene is set, the lighting is perfect – and the moment you look through your viewfinder your subject looks like the life just got sucked right out of them. Humans beings tend to behave in strange and usual ways when placed in front of the camera and our job as portrait photographers becomes not only to technically capture a quality image, but to coach our subjects toward what Peter considers that elusive SHABANG’in shot!

No one is better at this than Peter Hurley – in fact, he is the master at engaging clients, creating an atmosphere that pulls out their personality and infuses it directly into the image, his constant goal is to take someone with a bland look on their face, and turning it into something captivating.

In this lecture, Peter will discuss his Hurley Headshot System and signature moves for getting a subject to come alive in front of the camera. Learn how to move your subject toward that moment that Peter likes to call a SHABANG!; the instant when adrenalin, emotion and drama all come together allowing you to capture an image that will make the artist inside you stop and say, “wow!”

Me Ra Koh

I didn’t find photography.

Photography found me.

And then it healed me.

I started as a writer.

For 10 years I worked on one book, Beauty Restored: Finding Life and Hope After Date Rape. The heart of this book was to be a message of hope to women and their husbands/boyfriends, parents and friends. I wanted them to know they were not alone in their pain. It is based on my own painful experience of being date raped in college and how I went from living out of my car, checking into a psychiatric ward, and eventually finding hope to rebuild a life worth living.

Almost ten years later, on March 20th, 2001, the first day of spring, I birthed two babies; my beautiful, firstborn, Pascaline and Beauty Restored. When Pascaline was three months old we hit the road and for the next 18 months did over 50 National TV Shows and Radio Interviews. While my little one slept in the backs of churches and colleges, I was up front sharing my story and hoping one woman would feel hope again.

After two amazing years on the road, Brian and I were pregnant with our second. His name was Aidan, our little fire. While in TN for a week long speaking tour I started experiencing abdominal pains and three weeks later our baby Aidan’s heartbeat stopped.

After losing Aidan, I couldn’t speak or write and sought refuge in Brian and Pascaline’s love. During those times of grief, I picked up a camera. Pascaline’s innocence was precious from every view point. I found myself working to capture her story: the times she couldn’t stop giggling, the times she curled into the safety of daddy’s arms, the asleep time, the fussy and frustrated times, the first time she played with a yellow balloon… Friends and family started noticing the photos and asked me to photograph their kids. Soon brides were contacting me for their weddings. I had gone from speaking to 800 women at a conference and sharing my story, to finding healing behind a camera. Life had taken this unexpected turn and now I was given the privilege to artistically capture another woman’s story on her wedding day. Photography had found me.

A new chapter of life unfolded, a chapter of writing other people’s stories through images. Stories of new beginnings, moments of choosing to trust. Every time we shot a wedding I would see these moments; a grandmother reaches to squeeze the bride’s hand, a groom whispers in his bride’s ear, and then her giggle afterwards, a father’s tears while he dances with his daughter. What could be more worthy of capturing than these moments?

Photography is not just an art, trade or skill. It’s a tool of healing for myself and those I have the honor of capturing. When we approach the camera as a healing tool, the world opens it’s heart to us.

Melanie Myhre

I have been creative from an early age, exploring every creative outlet I could find including painting, writing, singing, and crafting. In 9th grade my discovery of film photography changed my life. I found the thing that made me feel the most ALIVE. The turning point was there, but I resisted, afraid to pursue a career in the arts. Instead, I earned a bachelors degree in Ecology and Environmental Science because I thought that was the sensible thing to do. In the end, passion won and I started my portrait studio and never looked back. My specialty is artistic cinematic portraiture including teens and high school seniors, weddings and my trademark fairytale fashion. My continuing goal is to produce images that are infused with a unique vision and a romantic sensibility, resulting in portraits that are award winning, timeless and far from ordinary.

Jason Pierce

Like father like son. Jason Pierce was raised in a home where his dad’s amazing photos painted the walls. Watching his dad and appreciating photography from an early age, the artistry stuck. He started taking journalism classes through high school and college and began to learn photographic techniques. However, he didn’t find his personal style until his daughter was born. Jason consistently photographed her trying to capture her every expression. The outcome was more than he had hoped for. He had found his style, creating images that would elicit a reaction. As his family grew, and his two sons were born, so did his passion for photography and it soon became his career.

As time passed he wanted to step out of his normal photography style and try something new. He began experimenting with exposure and exploring light and a passion for infrared photography was born. This quickly became a favorite style because it pushed him to blend art and science. It is exceptionally technical and presents many challenges that force him to think outside the box on what he needs to achieve to capture a scene or convey a mood. As he started exploring and solving technical problems with his photos the solutions led to some very creative and dramatic images. Using this technique, he has captured many Oklahoma City cityscapes, architectural buildings and travel landscapes.

Jason graduated with a Journalism degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, he lives in Oklahoma City with his wife and children. He owns Grand Life Originals Photography with his father, Ron.

This year will be Pam’s fourth year organizing the Tulsa area’s Annual Help Portrait Event started by Photographer, Jeremy Cowart. Pam has been a Thumbtack Pro Photographer since 2015 and holds membership with the Indian Nation Professional Photographers Association (INPPA). She was also nominated through the Tulsa based Erudite Chic Magazine and won “Headshot Photographer of the Midwest for 2017”.

Always looking to give into the lives of others, Pam volunteers weekly at John 3:16 Mission Women’s Program in Tulsa and summer of 2017 she created a photography internship for teens in the Union School Tulsa Carrera Program.

Inspiring audiences is something Pam loves and she has addressed crowds at the local camera clubs as well as Bedford Camera’s PhotoCon Conference in Oklahoma City, the Mid America Photography Symposium (MAPSym) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and the American Marketing Association of Tulsa. Whether you are a headshot client or a fellow photographer, Pam will inspire you to capture great photos of people and teach you how to have fun doing it!

Sapphire

Sapphire likens herself to a unicorn, where we think she’s real but rarely seen. In 2015 she co-hosted the PhotoCon “Panel of Photographers” with Christian Bruggeman. Was sighted in Las Vegas 2016 at WPPI hobnobbing with Peter Hurley and his Headshot Crew. She was supposed to go to Headshot Mania in Palm Springs this past February, but missed her flight. Sapphire was last seen briefly on the Live FaceBook FotoFacts Podcast at the Bedfords, Tulsa Location on February 28, 2018.

Sapphire is looking forward to co-hosting the “Let’s Make A Deal” game with the FotoFacts Podcasters Robert Trawick and Jim Felder here at PhotoCon! Get ready for some fun and amazing prizes!
